4 hours of playing with letters and shapes

Understanding letterpress technology

Your own print-pressed posters

The workshop in detail

  • 4h30
  • 15 years min.
  • 4 to 6 participants
  • Up to 12 people for a privatization
  • This four-hour workshop offers participants a unique opportunity to delve into the world of traditional letterpress printing, under the guidance of an experienced craftsman.

The workshop takes place in a studio that breathes history and craft. You will first be given a general introduction and basic history of the studio and printing techniques, then shown how the various machines work, as well as printing examples and materials.

After this, you can get to work yourself. You will explore the cabinets full of wooden letters, and then use them to compose your own text (image). We have two large test presses available on which you can print your own poster using the arsenal of wooden letters and shapes.

No previous knowledge is required to participate in this workshop, making it accessible to enthusiasts of all levels. The workshop is suitable for participants aged 12 years and above, with children needing to be accompanied by an adult.

Included in the workshop are the cost of materials (ink and paper), coffee, tea, drinks and snacks. Each participant will receive their personally printed poster to take home (maximum size 50x70cm).

It's nice if you can think about what you want to make in advance, in order to waste as little time as possible during the workshop. You are also advised to bring an apron or wear clothes suitable for a hands-on activity involving ink. Please note, no lunch is provided, but you can of course bring your own.

    Meet Stoffel

    Graphic designer

Stoffel, a passionate graphic designer and lover of typography and craft, has an eclectic background. After studying product development and graphic design, he worked in an advertising agency for two years before working as an independent designer. To get away from behind the screen from time to time, he started collecting old craft printing materials.

This has since led to more than a decade of experience working with traditional printing machines, from cabinets of wooden letters and small hand presses, to the heavier work. For example, he taught himself to work with the Heidelberg jobbing press and other materials.

Worth mentioning in his collaboration with the Museum Plantin-Moretus, for which a project with mobile printing bicycles was designed in 2016, and the museum shop was re-designed. This project won several major awards, including the Henry Van de Velde-, European Design- and the Faro Museum Product-Award.

With his own studio, Stoffel currently shares not only his knowledge of techniques and paper, but also his love for the craft. Knowledge he is happy to share with you during one of his workshops.

I like the smell of letterpress ink on a friday afternoon. Thanks Stoffel! Dirk Hendriks - 22062024
